Monolithos Castle
Monolithos Castle is the main attraction of our village and one of the most popular on the whole island. It’s an amazing example of medieval fortification. The castle was built in the 14th century by the Knights of St. John, both as an observatory and as a defensive spot against Ottoman invasions.
The castle is located on top of a towering rock formation, hence the name “monolithos“. Its strategic location made it almost impossible for attackers to capture it. The Castle played a key role in the defense of Rhodes during the 15th and 16th centuries.
Castle of Monolithos consists of a main tower and several smaller ones, all connected by a series of walls and fortifications. The central tower is the highest point of the castle and offers a stunning view of the surrounding landscape. After climbing the steep stairs, visitors can see the ruins of the castle grounds, the warehouses, as well as the chapel of Agios Panteleimon.
The chapel is open to the public and on its walls, visitors can see beautiful frescoes that are an excellent example of medieval art.
Apart from its historical significance, Monolithos Castle is also a popular spot for watching the sunset. The castle is surrounded by beautiful Mediterranean vegetation, and the view from the top is truly amazing.
Today, the Castle of the Monolithos is a preserved monument, and entrance is free for the public. This is a must-see for history buffs and especially those interested in medieval fortifications. FOURNI BEACH
Fourni Beach is a stunning and secluded location, situated 7 km away from the village. Its soft sandy shores and clear blue waters make it an ideal destination for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy tourist spots of Rhodes.
The beach is surrounded by lush vegetation and towering rocks, creating a breathtaking scenery that will remain etched in the memories of its visitors. The Aegean’s crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming, while the gradual slope of the seabed makes it a safe spot for families with young children.
During the summer months, visitors can enjoy food and refreshments at the beach’s canteen.
Apart from its natural beauty, Fournoi Beach also boasts significant historical and cultural importance. The cliffs surrounding the beach feature ancient Greek carved tombs that visitors can explore.
”LIMERI” CAVE OF THE SPIES
The ‘‘Limeri’‘ cave holds great historical significance as it was the site of heroic moments during the Second World War. Between 1941 to 1945, British and Greek soldiers who supported the Greek resistance lost their lives in the cave.
However, accessing the cave can be challenging due to the rough terrain in the surrounding area. It is recommended to go with someone who is familiar with the trail if you plan to visit.
APOLAKKIA DAM
The Apolakkia Dam has created a beautiful lake and is one of the worth visiting attractions in Rhodes island. The lake is surrounded by green landscapes and hills and is home to a diverse range of bird species.
It is a popular destination for both tourists and locals as there are numerous nature-based activities to enjoy here. There is an outdoor activity park in the vicinity where visitors can partake in activities such as canoeing, kayaking, archery, cycling, and hiking.
SIANNA VILLAGE
Sianna is a small mountain village located on the outskirts of Mount Akramytis. It is known for its amazing view of the Aegean and for the quality honey produced by the local beekeepers. The houses are stone built and have the traditional ”patellia” roofs, adding particular architectural interest to the character of the village.
Sianna is a popular destination for tourists, as it offers a peaceful and picturesque escape from the noisy tourist resorts of the island. Visitors can take a leisurely walk in the village square, taste honey and other local products, or relax in one of the local taverns serving traditional Greek cuisine.
