Welcome to Monolithos village Rhodes

The local Community of Monolithos and its residents welcome you to our village website.

Our purpose is to provide information and photographic material with the aim of highlighting our village and the surrounding areas to our future visitors!

History

The first historical reports about our village begin in 1850 by archaeologists who were looking for the ancient site of Kameiros in our area.

In 1912, after the departure of the Turks and the arrival of the Italians, the Monolithians together with villagers from other regions sign a decree to the Great Powers requesting Union with Mother Greece.

In 1922, the Italians take the first census. The inhabitants reach 450, all of them Orthodox Christians. In the village there is a Royal Carbine Station and has four military men, a detachment of Customs, a Post Office and a Customs Department. Also, there is a small primary school with three teachers, five classes and a total of 60 students.

In years 1940-1945, our village offers incalculable sacrifices to the country with Limeri and its heroic inhabitants.

On March 31, 1947, the village was liberated by the Italians

On March 7, 1948 joins back again Greece!

The Village

Monolithos village is built at an altitude of 700 meters and is situated 56 kilometers from Rhodes. Nowadays, 136 residents live permanently here.

It is located on the southern side of Akramitis mountain and extends to the south, towards Cape Fournoi. Towards the west, our famous Monolithos castle overtops a huge rock.

The surrounding area is overgrown with pines, cypresses, and myrtles. This is where we owe our unbeatable honey and oil. Our forests have always been full of partridges and hares making us a popular hunting destination during the winter months.

Attractions

Undoubtedly, the most famous attraction of our village is the Castle. It has stood on top of the huge rock for more than 5 centuries and is preserved to this day in relatively good condition. Perhaps the most ideal destination to enjoy the magical sunset that the Aegean gives us!

Just a little furtherer is situated the beach of Fourni. A hidden gem of Rhodes island, not only for its crystal clear waters and sandy beach, but also for the mysterious carved tombs found in its rocks.

Not so popular, but also historically important for the island, is the Limeri. The word Limeri is synonymous with the Dodecanese Resistance against the conquerors. Limeri is a cave in which Greek and foreign resistance fighters took refuge during the Second World War.

Things to Do

Our village can offer peace and tranquility to the visitor, but this does not mean that there are no activities to fill his time.

From hiking on the outskirts of Akramytis to canoe-kayaking and archery at the Appollakia dam, one thing is for sure. Monolithos of Rhodes is a destination that can cover all ages and all kinds of interests.

Breathtaking views of course ! Best view is from up on the road where the road eventually takes you down at the entrance of the rock. Those who cannot take the stairs, can also enjoy the view from up above the road. Just be a bit careful on the rocky paves and can be slippery in some places .

Make the trip to Monolithos to watch the sunset go down in the Aegean. Easy parking, free access and easy (if a bit slippy) walk up to the castle. Lovely photo opportunity!

Lovely place, about a 40min drive from Lindos. Stunning views, quiet, not crowded at all. Mind that to do the photo in ruins as many did; you must go off trail, behind the fenced area🤫, as it is deemed dangerous now. Still plenty of great photo opportunities 😊

Loved our visit to the Castle of Monolithos. The views are amazing and a lovely drive to it down the coast. There is no charge to the castle and the little coffee shop at the bottom is lovely. Would recommend

            Absolutely stunning view!

The road to the castle is quite an adventure with amazing views. But once you get to the castle it’s only few minutes hike up to the mountain and it’s really worth it. The views from the castle is stunning all the way down to the sea level. If you are afraid of heights this might not be your attraction.

              Worth a visit at sunset

We visited Monolithos Castle at sunset, well worth the drive from wherever you stay. The little church at the top is beautiful.

Looking forward to meet you at our beautiful village!
