Must Places to visit in Monolithos village
History
The first historical reports about our village begin in 1850 by archaeologists who were looking for the ancient site of Kameiros in our area.
In 1912, after the departure of the Turks and the arrival of the Italians, the Monolithians together with villagers from other regions sign a decree to the Great Powers requesting Union with Mother Greece.
In 1922, the Italians take the first census. The inhabitants reach 450, all of them Orthodox Christians. In the village there is a Royal Carbine Station and has four military men, a detachment of Customs, a Post Office and a Customs Department. Also, there is a small primary school with three teachers, five classes and a total of 60 students.
In years 1940-1945, our village offers incalculable sacrifices to the country with Limeri and its heroic inhabitants.
On March 31, 1947, the village was liberated by the Italians
On March 7, 1948 joins back again Greece!
The Village
Monolithos village is built at an altitude of 700 meters and is situated 56 kilometers from Rhodes. Nowadays, 136 residents live permanently here.
It is located on the southern side of Akramitis mountain and extends to the south, towards Cape Fournoi. Towards the west, our famous Monolithos castle overtops a huge rock.
The surrounding area is overgrown with pines, cypresses, and myrtles. This is where we owe our unbeatable honey and oil. Our forests have always been full of partridges and hares making us a popular hunting destination during the winter months.
Attractions
Undoubtedly, the most famous attraction of our village is the Castle. It has stood on top of the huge rock for more than 5 centuries and is preserved to this day in relatively good condition. Perhaps the most ideal destination to enjoy the magical sunset that the Aegean gives us!
Just a little furtherer is situated the beach of Fourni. A hidden gem of Rhodes island, not only for its crystal clear waters and sandy beach, but also for the mysterious carved tombs found in its rocks.
Not so popular, but also historically important for the island, is the Limeri. The word Limeri is synonymous with the Dodecanese Resistance against the conquerors. Limeri is a cave in which Greek and foreign resistance fighters took refuge during the Second World War.
Things to Do
Our village can offer peace and tranquility to the visitor, but this does not mean that there are no activities to fill his time.
